OM Team: 7-9 Year Olds!Meeting time:
Friday afternoons 1:00-3:00 pm begins OCTOBER 4th WHAT IS ODYSSEY? Odyssey of the Mind is all about teamwork in CREATIVE problem-solving. The kids are given a set of 5 long-term problems, one of which they choose to solve as a team in an 8 minute presentation that they give at competition in the spring. Points are awarded to teams for the most creative approach and for the melding of the individual members' ideas into their final project. They can use drama, scenery, mechanics, humor, etc. to present their unique take on an answer to their problem. The short term problems are spontaneous. The kids train for them with several think-outside-the-box exercises during their meetings. Basically, they are looking for solutions with imagination. The parents and/or coaches are NOT allowed to contribute ANY ideas to the kids' solutions, so they are uniquely theirs. They must do it all, including managing their money, as OM sets a spending limit for each project! Practices are a blast! And, kids learn how capable they are when left to accomplish things without us ever-present homeschooling grown-ups, and become more confident in themselves (individually, and as a team player)! |
